What do the new multi-core computers really mean to you?
Historically, computers have come with a single processor known as the CPU. This is basically the engine of the computer. Servers that handled large numbers of transactions or many users are built with more than one CPU to split the workload and make the servers faster and more powerful. These are known as multi-processor computers.
In the race to make ever more powerful computers chip makers such as Intel, AMD, IBM, and Sun are constantly coming up with new manufacturing processes and methods to make CPUs more powerful. As the transistors and components on CPUs have gotten smaller it has become increasingly difficult for them to follow what has been known as Moore’s Law which essentially states that processors will double in speed every 18 months.

Whether toys, food, or data; sharing enables more than just one to benefit from something you or others posses. Sharing toys means playing together, which is just more fun. Sharing food means neither of us will go hungry. Sharing data means working together more efficiently.
Say I have a document or a spreadsheet or even a picture that you could really use to do your job. The same may go in reverse. To enable both of us to reap the benefits of any files or information that either of us posses we need to share. Simple sharing might be to email the file to you or place it on a CD or USB memory stick (not all that long ago it would have been a floppy disk) so you can put it in your own computer and use it. Sometimes that is all we need to do. Of course if either one of us changes the file, which is bound to happen, how does the other get the updated file? Whose is newer? Perhaps now mine has newer information than yours while yours looks nicer than mine. If only we had one file that we could share and work on together; it would be current and look nice.
That is one of the main reasons companies implement a data network. All of the computers and in turn people are tied together enabling an easy way to share files and information between everyone. This alone allowed for one of the greatest increases in worker productivity of the 20th century. No more running around looking for information and duplicating work someone else has already done.

With the Visual Studio 2008 product line being released I wanted to check out the new improvements I have heard so much about from Microsoft. Visual Studio is a software development platform for Windows-based as well as Web-based applications. While the Visual Studio product encompasses features for both it costs between $300 and $800 depending on the version and where you buy it.
In this era of Open Source, free is always an attractive alternative to expensive products, ex. OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office. With the growing pressure on Microsoft’s Windows platform from Linux and Apple’s revitalized OS X, one of Microsoft’s strategies is to continue to have the vast majority of applications available for Windows. Ever notice there is no Microsoft Office for Linux? The easiest way to accomplish this is to have the majority of developers writing programs for your platform. Developers require some sort of environment to write these programs in. Enter Visual Studio. Many believe Visual Studio to be the best environment for developing applications, which is how Microsoft wants it. This makes developing Windows applications convenient and preferable. To help push Visual Studio Microsoft has wisely released various free Express versions.
